On 24 December 2024, Pope Francis launched the Jubilee 2025 by opening the Holy Door of St Peter's Basilica in Rome. This major religious event, celebrated every 25 years since 1450, is expected to draw more than 30 million pilgrims to the Eternal City. Experience the event from our villa with pool in Umbria: Villa Allegria (Foligno).
The Jubilee 2025 at a glance:
The Jubilee, also known as the Holy Year, is a Catholic tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Established in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, it offers the faithful the opportunity to receive plenary indulgence — that is, the full forgiveness of their sins. The Jubilee 2025, held under the theme of "Pilgrims of Hope", will be a defining moment of faith, penance and charity.
Pope Francis, a passionate advocate of an open and merciful Church, has sought to make this Jubilee a moment of profound spiritual conversion. From 24 December 2024 to 6 January 2026, Catholics from across the world will be invited to cross the Holy Door, a symbol of renewal and divine grace.
Worth noting: The Jubilee draws inspiration from the ancient traditions of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement in Judaism, thus highlighting the shared roots of both religions.
With 30 million pilgrims expected — 5 million more than during the previous Jubilee in 2000 — Rome is preparing for record-breaking crowds. The Eternal City is actively gearing up for this extraordinary event:
At the heart of this undertaking, St Peter's Basilica and its famous namesake square will serve as the stage for the Jubilee's opening ceremony, broadcast worldwide. Pilgrims will also have the chance to discover the treasures of the Vatican, including the magnificent Sistine Chapel.
Throughout the Holy Year, a packed programme of religious celebrations and cultural events will punctuate life in the Roman city. Highlights will include the Christmas Midnight Mass in 2024, the Urbi et Orbi blessing at Easter 2025, and the solemn closing of the Jubilee on 6 January 2026.
But the Jubilee is above all an inner journey — a unique experience of faith and sharing. By crossing the Holy Door and performing the prescribed works of charity, pilgrims can receive plenary indulgence and undergo a deep spiritual renewal.
Worth noting: Pope Francis, true to his commitment to the most vulnerable, will visit Rebibbia prison during the Jubilee, as a gesture of solidarity with inmates.
For pilgrims wishing to combine their Jubilee experience with a restorative retreat, Umbria — the birthplace of St Francis of Assisi — is the destination of choice. Just 1.5 hours from Rome, this land of spirituality offers a setting of nature and serenity perfectly suited to quiet reflection.
