Discover the highest waterfall in Europe! Trails, tips and opening times for an unforgettable hike at the Marmore Falls in Umbria.

Imagine standing at the edge of a precipice, the deafening roar of churning waters filling the air around you. Welcome to the Marmore Falls, a breathtaking natural spectacle nestled in the heart of Umbria. At 165 metres high, split across 3 vertiginous drops, it is quite simply the tallest waterfall in Europe. At Villa Allegria, your premium villa rental based in Foligno, we have put together a complete guide to help you make the most of this gem on an unforgettable hike. Follow the guide!

Good to know: despite appearances, the Marmore Falls is actually an artificial creation, built by the Romans in 271 BC. Its name comes from the Latin "marmor", meaning marble, a reference to the white rocks from which the waterfall cascades.

Waymarked trails for every level

The Marmore Falls offers a variety of waymarked trails to discover its wonders from every angle. The two unmissable spots are the lower and upper viewpoints. The first offers a sweeping view of the entire falls, while the second looks out over the first drop and the famous Specola, built by Pope Pius VI.

But to fully immerse yourself in this dreamlike setting, nothing beats a walk along the trails:

  • Trail no. 1 connects the two viewpoints and takes you all the way to the romantic Lovers' Balcony
  • Trail no. 2, also known as the "Nymph's Ring", runs closest to the falls and lets you feel the spray on your face
  • Trail no. 3, "Meeting of the Waters", is an easy stroll through the majestic Nera Gorge
  • Trail no. 4, "Pennarossa", offers a stunning bird's-eye panorama from above

Allow at least 3 hours 30 minutes to cover both viewpoints and 2 or 3 trails. Trails no. 2 and 3 are suitable for children; the others call for somewhat more sure-footed hikers.

A personal note: on our last visit, we took the Lovers' Trail up to the famous balcony. Legend has it that two cursed lovers, Felicia and Velino, were transformed by a witch into two streams that together form the waterfall — just the kind of touch of romance to add a little magic to your hike!

Our tips for a successful visit

To fully enjoy the spectacle of the thundering waters, timing is everything. Be sure to check the water release schedule before you visit. In summer, we recommend coming early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a more peaceful experience in the cooler part of the day.

In terms of gear, good hiking boots or sturdy trainers will do the job. Pack a change of clothes and something waterproof as well. You can even rent disposable ponchos on site!

To make the most of your visit, start at the lower viewpoint and wait for the water release — it's an experience not to be missed. You can then enjoy a picnic on site before continuing your exploration. For groups, it is also possible to book a fascinating guided tour.

Worth noting: evening visits are organised in summer to admire the waterfall magnificently lit up after dark. A truly magical experience!

Practical information to plan your hike

Here is a summary of the key information to keep in mind:

  • The waterfall is accessible from two paying car parks at the entrances to both viewpoints
  • Admission is charged; free for children under 4; tickets can be purchased online
  • Open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season (check the official website)
  • Dogs admitted on a lead
  • Toilets and drinking water available at both viewpoints

The power of the waterfall — which can reach 1,000 m³/s during releases, compared with a normal flow of 50 m³/s — is harnessed by a hydroelectric plant. This is what accounts for the regulated flow according to a precise timetable.

There you have it — you are all set for an extraordinary adventure at the Marmore Falls. A sense of wonder is guaranteed as you witness the raw power of nature and the beauty of the Umbrian landscape. This magnificent setting has inspired countless artists over the centuries, including the poet Lord Byron. It has also served as a backdrop for several films, among them "The Best of Youth" by Marco Tullio Giordana.
